 About Sudakshina:

I was born and raised in west London till I was 12 and I had moved to Calcutta, India, for further schooling.

After successfully passing the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE, circa, 2000) and the Indian School Certificate in Humanities (ISC, 2002), I came back to London to pursue a BA (2:1) Hons in New Media Journalism with Film & TV Studies from Thames Valley University (2002-2005). I have successfully pursued and achieved a Professional Diploma in Psychological Therapies from the Institute of Counselling (2008-2009).

I have always felt drawn towards writing, psychology as well as the literary and visual art forms, so taking this sector up as a career path has been my intention, since I was quite young.

I have been writing in publications since I was 17, although my first break came when I was 16, through a poem I had casually sent to a children’s magazine in India called ‘News N Stuff’ (2000)

My first official stint as a young journalist came through winning a writing competition and (a group interview with the editorial board) for a weekly supplement, called ‘Voices,’  (The Statesman newspaper, 2001-2002) which was also slated for youngsters in India.

Through this opportunity, I experienced what it takes to be a journalist: the competitive colleagues, the pressure of beating rival newspapers and having heated, yet enjoyable, debates in the newsroom.

However, above all, nothing could beat the buzz I first got when I saw my first article and by line in print!

The very thought of hundreds of people out there reading what I wrote gave me a huge sense of responsibility and the urge to work on this more.

So, twenty pieces of assorted feature journalism later, I had definitely made my mind up on taking up journalism as a career, rather than being a teacher.

I had also provided a couple of youngsters tuition in English, History and Geography, during the same year, just to make a more informed decision.

On the whole, I am basically a warm and friendly person with a great interest in working and learning about people from all walks of life.

I strongly believe it’s the people who we work with that shape up the nature of our work-life, which, in turn, affects the quality of the work we do.

Through the career I’ve had so far, I have learnt how to be adept in organising, motivating, persuading, interviewing and advising people from all backgrounds.

I can also fluently speak, read and write, in Bengali and Hindi, thereby having the capability to offer my journalistic services for Asian magazines, newspapers, websites and broadcast media too.
