Osteopathy is an established, recognized system of diagnosis and treatment which lays its main emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body. It is distinctive in the fact that it recognizes that much of the pain and disability which we suffer stems from abnormalities in the function of the body`s structure as well as damage caused to it by disease.
[Description by the General Osteopathic Council, 28th October 1998]
Osteopathy is a statutorily regulated system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its foundations on the musculo-structural integrity of the body. It uses many diagnostic procedures used in conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. Its main strength however, lies in the unique way the patient is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint and the manual methods of treatment applied to suit the needs of the individual patient. Much of the physical pain and discomfort we suffer often arises from the misalignment or abnormality in this physical function of the body. Bad posture, excessive or improper use as well as diseases such as osteoarthritis can lead to such abnormalities or misalignment. Left untreated it could lead to long term or permanent damage.
Osteopaths use their hands to investigate the underlying causes of pain and to carry out treatment using a variety of gentle manual techniques to ease pain, reduce swelling and improving mobility. These may include muscle and connective tissue stretching, rhythmic joint movements and manipulation which may result in an audible ‘click’ which is simply the sound of gas bubbles popping in the fluid of the joints. Gentle releasing techniques are also used, particularly when treating children or elderly patients.
Osteopathy is a safe, effective, integrated approach to the treatment of a wide variety of conditions.
Why not see if osteopathy can help you achieve a better quality of life. The aim of osteopathy is to correct problems in the body frame, making it easier for the body to function normally and reducing the chance of problems occurring in the future. In seeking to maintain good health and prevent future problems. The osteopath`s plan may include advice on posture, diet, lifestyle and stress. While osteopaths are perhaps best known to the general public as specialists in treating disorders of musculoskeletal system, osteopathy is actually a complete (holistic) primary healthcare discipline not just for bad backs and stiff necks.
